248 held, 49 cases filed by river police in 6-day

DHAKA, April 30, 2025 (BSS) – The River Police in nationwide drives arrested 248 individuals and seized a huge quantity of illegal fishing nets, fish and   fry  in the last six days.

A press release of the River Police said they seized around 2.75 crore meter of illegal fishing nets, 5871 kilogram fish, 2.20 lakh pieces of shrimp fry, 1100 kilogram of jellied shrimp fish while 143 bushes were destroyed from the river during the operations.

The seized illegal nets have already been destroyed and the fish were distributed in the orphanages and young fish have been released in the water, it said.

Nine bodies were also recovered from the river, the release also said.

Forty nine cases against 248 arrestees were lodged. Of the cases, 17 were filed for illegal fishing, 20 cases for unruliness and one for stealing, one for sand extracting, one for obstructing government officers from performing duties, one for other purpose and nine for unnatural deaths.

The River Police also filed cases against 96 bulkheads for having no legal documents.
