State seeks suspension of Chinmoy Das bail, hearing Sunday next

DHAKA, April 30, 2025 (BSS) - The state has filed a petition with in the Appellate Division Chamber Court of the Supreme Court seeking a stay order on the bail granted by the High Court to former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in a sedition case.

"The petition has been filed seeking stay of bail . . . the hearing of this application may be held Sunday next," Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf told BSS today.

Earlier today, a High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Atoar Rahman and Justice Md Ali Reza granted the bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das making the rule absolute and delivering the verdict in favor of bail on the sedition charge.

Lawyers Prabir Ranjan Halder and Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya moved the bail petition in the court while Additional Attorney General Anik R Haque and Additional Attorney General Muhammad Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan represented the state.

On October 25, 2024, a huge gathering of the Sanatani community was held in Chittagong under the leadership of Chinmoy Krishna Das. Subsequently, a sedition case was filed against him, alleging disrespect to the national flag on October 31.

A total of 18 individuals, including Chinmoy, were named in the case. Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024.

The following day, his bail plea was rejected by the Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate's Court ordering his detention.

As sequel to the court's decision, a violent clash erupted between the members of law enforcement agency and Chinmoy's followers, including lawyers, near the court premises.

At that time, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was hacked to death. Since then, Chinmoy remained in custody. His bail application was again rejected by the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Chittagong on January 2, 2025.

Later, he filed a bail petition with the High Court.
