Ex-MP Zafar Alam placed on four-day remand

DHAKA, May 05, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today placed former Member of Parliament (MP) Zafar Alam on a four-day remand in connection with the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim.

The investigation officer of the case produced him before a court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra seeking a seven-day remand for proper investigation.

Later, the court granted a four-day remand after hearing the remand petition regarding the case.

Earlier, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah sent Zafar in jail on April 28. Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested him from the capital's Dhanmondi area on April 27.

According to case details, the BNP called a grand rally in the capital on October 28, 2023 as part of its central programme, while the ruling Awami League held a counter-rally on the same day.

It is alleged that an attack was carried out on the BNP rally with support from the police, targeting party leaders and workers.

Jubo Dal leader Shamim was killed during the attacks. On September 24, 2024, a case was filed with Paltan police station in this regards.

Zafar Alam was elected MP from Cox's Bazar-1 constituency (Chakaria-Pekua).
