Prof Abul Barkat remanded in money embezzlement case

DHAKA, July 23, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today placed economist and former chairman of the state-owned Janata Bank PLC Prof Abul Barkat on a two-day remand in a case lodged over embezzlement of Taka 297 crore from the bank by AnonTex Group.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain passed the order as Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) sought to place him on a three-day remand in the case.

Earlier, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Prof Abul Barkat from the capital's Dhanmondi area on July 10.

The ACC, on February 20, filed the case against 23 people, including Prof Abul Barkat and former governor of Bangladesh Bank Atiur Rahman, over the embezzlement.
