DHAKA, July 28, 2025 (BSS) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman today highlighted Bangladesh’s pursuit of honest leadership and functional democratic system through electoral reforms, saying that such progress could pave the way for a corruption-free and sustainable economy.

"We are striving, through various reforms in the upcoming election, to build a democratic and developing nation with honest leadership and good governance. If this effort succeeds, it will be possible to lead this country towards a corruption-free and sustainable economy," he said.

The Jamaat Ameer made these remarks while Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Bangladesh Park Yong-sik paid a courtesy call on him at the party’s central office in the capital’s Moghbazar area.

Briefing media following the meeting, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Porwar said that the discussion between the Ameer and the Korean Ambassador took place in a cordial atmosphere, covering bilateral issues, economic topics, and the prevailing situation of the country.

He said that the Jamaat Ameer referred to Bangladesh as a growing and developing economy with significant potential, noting that there is ample scopes and resources to build a sustainable economy.

He mentioned Bangladesh's global status as a leading garment-exporting country and its future possibilities.

The Ambassador expressed optimism about a quick resolution of issues related to export tariffs. Jamaat leaders also echoed hope that the matter would be addressed to a reasonable level for Bangladesh.

Shafiqur Rahman highlighted Bangladesh’s rich natural resources, dense population, green forests, rivers, seas, and seasonal winds as signs of great economic potential.

In reply to the envoy’s inquiry about the upcoming election, the political environment, and proposed reforms, the Ameer informed him that Jamaat is cooperating the government to reach national consensus on key reform issues.

Jamaat representatives are regularly and actively involved in the Consensus Commission, he said, adding “We hope that, based on a consensus, a fair and neutral electoral environment will be created in the upcoming election, Insha’Allah."

Regarding the election schedule, the Ameer said that Jamaat had proposed holding elections before Ramadan and a frank discussion was held on this topic, including electoral reforms concerning the Proportional Representation (PR) system.

At the meeting, the Ambassador was informed that most political parties in Bangladesh support the PR system, as it would safeguard the process from illicit money, muscle power, and nomination trading. It is considered a modern electoral approach for forming a quality parliament and ensuring voter representation.

The meeting also expressed optimism about strengthening future bilateral trade, economic cooperation, and investment between Bangladesh and Korea.
