Three awarded death penalties for gang rape in Netrakona

NETRAKONA, July 28, 2025 (BSS)- A court here today awarded death sentence to three persons for gang raping a 14 year girl and instigating her to commit suicide.

Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal of Netrakona Dr AKM Emdadul Haque pronounced the judgment in presence of the accused in a crowded court. 

The Judge also awarded them 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and fined Taka one lakh each, in default to suffer another three months RI.

The convicts are-Kawshik Chandra Sarkar alias Apu, 23, former agriculture affairs deputy secretary of Netrokona Zila Chhatra League, former Jubo League activists Mamun Akond, 26, and Sultan Miah,30.
  
According to the prosecution, the accused persons on September 3, 2017, gang raped a 14-year girl of Thakurkona area. Later, the rapists threatened the family members not to disclose the matter.

The girl went missing again next day and later her hanging body was recovered from a house of the area.

Victim’s mother filed a case with Netrakona Sadar thana accusing three persons in this connection but the accused forced to bury the body without post mortem as unnatural death (UD) case.

The people of the area became furious after knowing the information and local administration later exhumed the body from the grave and conducted a post mortem.

Police on September 12 arrested Kawshik and Mamun who gave confessional statements before the court. Police also arrested Sultan Miah from his farmhouse later.

Police on April 5, 2018 submitted charge sheet of the case.

Public Prosecutor of the court Md Nurul Kabir Rubel moved the case for the state.

The victim’s family and leaders of different women and human rights organizations expressed satisfaction over the judgment.
