1,200 sued, 5 held over attack on Hindu neighborhood in Rangpur

DHAKA, July 30, 2025 (BSS) - Five persons have been arrested in a joint operation over their suspected involvement in an attack on a Hindu neighborhood in Rangpur.

"Five persons have already been arrested in a joint operation in a case filed in this connection," said a press release issued today by the Police Headquarters.

According to the release, unidentified individuals vandalized, looted, and attacked the Hindu neighborhood of Aldadpur Balapara village under Betgari union of Gangachara upazila, allegedly over a Facebook post that hurt religious sentiment.

In connection with the incident, Rabindranath Roy (55) filed a complaint with Gangachara Model Police Station on July 29, accusing 1,000 to 1,200 unknown persons of vandalism and looting.

The case was filed under Sections 149/447/448/332/333/353/379/380/427/34 of the Penal Code.

The attack reportedly occurred following protests over the alleged social media post by a local teenager.
