JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Aug 04, 2025 (BSS)- Gano Odhikar Parishad Convener Nurul Haque Nur today said that the July Uprising has become an ‘unwritten commitment’ etched in the hearts and minds of the people.

“On August 3 last year, democratic forces stood boldly against a fascist regime. It was evident to all that the fall of such a system required the rise of a new political dynamic. This has become a silent promise carried within the public,” Nur said while addressing a seminar and prize-giving ceremony titled ‘July’s Commitment: Desire versus Reality’ at Jahangirnagar University.

The event was organized by the Jahangirnagar University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad to distribute prizes to winners of an essay competition on student rights, held at Zahir Raihan Auditorium.

Nurul Huq Nur recalled the authoritarian practices of the ousted Awami League regime. “During that time, a privileged group enjoyed state benefits without accountability. They committed injustice as they preferred, assuming that they were above the law,” he said.

Nur also called for the formulation of a new constitution to prevent any political party from turning into a fascist force in the future. “All past governments have amended the constitution at will to serve their own interests. The Awami regime did the same. They turned the constitution into a one-man document focused on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This is not appropriate at all,” he said.

“It is now imperative to formulate a new constitution that ensures welfare for the masses,” he added.

He also lauded the role of Jahangirnagar University students and faculty in the July uprising. “At JU, a section of courageous teachers consistently stood by students that something rare in our country. JU’s role during the uprising was remarkable,” he stated.

The event was presided over by President of the JU unit of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad Iqbal Hossain, while JU unit General Secretary Nazrul Islam moderated the event.

Besides, fathers of two July Uprising martyrs Mannan Gazi and Bulbul Kabir, Central Chhatra Odhikar Parishad General Secretary Nazmul Hasan, JU Convener Shakil Uz Zaman, and Advocate Sheikh Waqqut Hossain, Legal Affairs Secretary of Gano Odhikar Parishad were present as special guests.
