CHATTOGRAM, August 5, 2025 (BSS) - The July Mass Uprising Day was observed in the port city and its adjacent upazilas to honour the martyrs and injured of the July Mass Uprising, 2024 and marking the downfall of autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina.
Various government and non-government organizations chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day. The programmes included placing wreaths at the graves of July martyrs, bringing out processions and holding discussions marking the day.
On Tuesday morning, City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain paid homage at the grave of Martyred Shahid Mohammad Alam at Garibullah Shah Mazar in Dampara of the city.
Besides, various government organizations also paid homage at the grave of Martyred Shahidul Islam in the Rasulbagh residential area of Baklia in the city.
After paying wreaths, City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said, “We will not let the blood of the martyrs of the July Uprising go in vain...Their sacrifice have shown us the way in the fight to return to democracy”.
Dr Shahdat said, “For the past 16 years, democratic forces including BNP have been subjected to torture and have sacrificed their lives in the movement. We were on the streets in the anti-dictatorship movement in the 1990s, our predecessors fought in the Liberation War in 1971, and our children were martyred in 1924.”
In the morning, the district administration started the day's program by paying tribute to Mohammad Alam by placing flower wreaths at the grave of Alam in the Rasulbag area of Baklia in the city.
In the afternoon, a reception and discussion meeting was held at the Circuit House for the family members of the martyrs and those injured in the July Uprising. Two films named 'Julai Anirban' and 'The Art of Democracy' were screened there.
Meanwhile, on the anniversary of the fall of the Awami League government, the Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a rally in the city called 'July Awakening, Building New Entrepreneurship'.
