Seven killed as microbus plunges into roadside canal in Noakhali

NOAKHALI, Aug 6, 2025 (BSS) - Seven people were killed when a speeding microbus plunged into a roadside canal in the Chandraganj area under Begumganj upazila of district early today.

Abdul Hamid, assistant director of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed the incident. 

The deceased are all members of the same family. They hailed from Choupolli area of Uttar Joypur union under Lakshmipur Sadar upazila. However, their identity could not be known immediately. 

Police and Local said, the accident occurred around 5:30am when the microbus was heading towards Lakshmipur from Dhaka. The car lost control and fell into a roadside canal, killing seven people on the spot. 

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandraganj Highway Police Station Md Mobarak Hossain Bhuiyan said, "We suspect that the driver fell asleep while driving, which led to the accident. Although a few passengers managed to get out, seven others got trapped inside and died." 

"Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to nearby hospitals, assuming they were alive. Police are working to recover the bodies and confirm the identities of the deceased, the OC added.
