Dhaka, Aug 9, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan today reaffirmed that the decision taken on July 17 last year to keep residential halls free from student politics remains in effect.

The announcement came as the VC spoke to a group of students staging a sit-in in front of his residence early Saturday, demanding a ban on political activities in halls.

On July 17, 2024, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, students had forced the hall administration to remove Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and activists from all dormitories and implement the policy of keeping halls free from politics.

In the early hours of Saturday, students from different halls gathered on the streets chanting slogans such as "1-2-3-4, hall politics no more" and "freedom or slavery."

In this regard, DU Proctor Dr Saifuddin Ahmed said the university's stance remains unchanged. "No student politics will be allowed inside the residential halls. Activities may be conducted centrally, such as at Madhu's Canteen. That was the understanding," he said.

He added that the Provost Standing Committee will meet later in the day to review the situation and discuss the matter with student organizations whose names have been mentioned in connection with the incident.
