DHAKA, Aug 13, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeeb-e-Ameer and former Member of Parliament Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher today said that even after 54 years of independence, the people of Bangladesh have yet to witness a truly free, fair and impartial national election. 

Speaking as the chief guest at a rally in the capital's Bijoynagar area, Dr Taher said, "After the July Uprising, the nation is now dreaming of building a new Bangladesh, where the people's aspirations for credible elections can be fulfilled." 

The rally, demanding legal recognition of the July Declaration and the July Charter and calling for the next national parliamentary elections in line with them, was jointly organized by the Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

A protest procession followed the event, starting from Bijoynagar and ending in front of the Chief Justice's residence, passing Kakrail Nightingale intersection. 

Dr Taher demanded immediate legal recognition of the July Declaration in accordance with public sentiment. "The government should not act in the interest of any particular political party," he said. 

"Rather, it should give legal status to the July Declaration through a national referendum," he added. 

Emphasizing the need for structural reforms, he remarked, "Justice for past genocides and the restructuring of the state are essential to realize the dream of a new Bangladesh." 

Dr Taher also strongly advocated introducing the Proportional Representation (PR) system in national elections. 

He urged the government to implement the seven-point demand, which includes adopting the PR system and enacting reforms rooted in the spirit of the July Uprising and the July Charter.
