Huge banned illegal fishing nets seized, 420 held in past week

DHAKA, Aug 14, 2025 (BSS0 - The River Police seized a huge illegal fishing net and arrested 420 crime suspects from different parts of the country in the past week.
 
The arrest and seizure were made as part of the nationwide operation to protect the country's fisheries resources and ensure safety on the waterways.
 
Marufa Yasmin, Superintendent of Police (Intelligence), River Police Headquarters, Dhaka informed the media of the matter. 
 
In the various operations conducted by the River Police over the past seven days, over 3.44 crore meters of illegal nets, 2,502 kg of fish were seized and 251 bushes were destroyed from the river.
 
In this operation by the River Police, cases were filed against 161 bulkheads and four dredgers were seized.
 
A total of 420 accused were arrested. Some 86 cases including 41 under the Fisheries Act, 31 for reckless driving, four for land extraction, five for Unintentional Death, one under Arms Act, one for theft, one under the Mineral Resources Act and one under Special Powers Act, were filed in these connections.
 
Eleven bodies were recovered during the period.
 
The seized illegal nets have been destroyed and the fish have been distributed to the orphanage.
