HC names 7 amici curiae on Speaker's oath to President rule

DHAKA, Aug 14, 2025 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today appointed seven eminent jurists as amici curiae to provide legal opinions during the hearing on a rule regarding the administration of the President's oath by the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS).

A High Court division bench of Justice Sashanka Shekhar Sarkar and Justice K M Zahid Sarwar passed the order and set October 26 for the hearing.

The seven amici curiae are: Zainul Abedin, Probir Neogi, AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Shahdeen Malik, Ahsanul Karim, Mustafizur Rahman Khan and Jyotirmoy Barua.

"The hearing was heard in part today and placing of arguments by the petitioner is at its fag end. The court has appointed seven amici curiae for giving their legal opinions," said Barrister Omar Faruk, who moved the plea in this connection before the court.

Supreme Court (SC) lawyer Barrister Omar Faruk filed the writ petition on behalf of lyricist and writer Shahidullah Farazi on March 10, seeking a directive that the Chief Justice should administer the oath to the President.

The High Court, after holding a primary hearing on the matter, issued the rule.

Officials concerned, including the Law Secretary, Cabinet Secretary and Supreme Court Registrar General were asked to respond to the rule.
