Joint anti-polythene drives seize 13,026 kg polythene, fine Tk 6.2 lakh

DHAKA, Aug 14, 2025 (BSS) — In a nationwide drive on environmental law violations, the Department of Environment (DoE), in coordination with local administrations and law enforcement agencies, conducted simultaneous mobile court operations in Narayanganj, Rajbari and Shariatpur today.

Acting on violations under Section 6(a) of the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995 (amended in 2010), the drives targeted the illegal production, sale, supply and marketing of banned polythene bags.

A total of 11 cases were filed during the operations, resulting in fines amounting to Tk 620,200. 
Authorities also seized 13,026 kilograms of illegal polythene and disconnected power supply to three establishments found in breach of the law.

In a separate operation, a mobile court in Fulbari area of Bagerhat Sadar, led by Assistant Commissioners and Executive Magistrates Md. Tanvir Islam and Adnan Zulfikar, took action against the illegal use of hydraulic horns.

Two vehicles were penalised, and four hydraulic horn pipes were seized, resulting in fines of Tk 1,500. The prosecution was monitored by Delwar Hossain, Assistant Director, DoE Bagerhat.

Meanwhile, in Lalmonirhat Sadar, another mobile court headed by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mononita Das filed six cases against vehicles for using banned hydraulic horns and causing excessive noise pollution. 

Fines of Tk 3,000 were collected and ten hydraulic horns were seized and destroyed.
