DHAKA, Aug 16, 2025 (BSS) - Janmashtami, one of the major religious festivals of the Hindu community commemorating the birth of Lord Sri Krishna, was celebrated across the country today with due religious fervour, traditional rituals and colourful festivities.

According to Hindu belief, Lord Krishna was born on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the Bangla month of Bhadra. Devotees believe that he incarnates in every age to protect the virtuous, resist evil and establish truth, justice and harmony in society.

Marking the occasion, different religious, cultural and social organisations chalked out elaborate programmes including discussions, prayers, processions and distribution of prasad.

In Tangail, a colourful procession was brought out in Dhanbari upazila under the initiative of Sri Sri Radha Govinda Sevashram. 

Men and women of all ages joined the rally which paraded through the town before ending at the Sevashram premises. The venue turned into a gathering place of devotees. 

Dhanbari Upazila BNP President Principal Azizur Rahman was present as the chief guest at the procession. 

Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Front Dhanbari branch president Niranjan Das, general secretary Utpal Basak, municipal branch member secretary Anik Ghosh Krishna and Dhanbari Sri Sri Radha Govinda Sevashram general secretary Tapas Dey were present, among others. Prasad was later distributed among all.

In Rangamati, the Sanatani Samaj organised a cultural programme, discussion and colourful Mangal Shobhajatra. 

A discussion meeting was held at Shah Bahumukhi High School hallroom with Hill District Council Chairman Kajal Talukder attending as chief guest and Council member Dayal Das in the chair. Swami Sanatan Rishi Maharaj delivered religious sermons on the occasion. 

Rangamati Sadar Zone Deputy Commander Md. Tarekul Imran, District BNP President Dipan Talukder Dipu, General Secretary Advocate Mamunur Rashid Mamun, District Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Prof Abdul Alim, District Puja Udjapan Parishad General Secretary Swapan Kanti Mahajan, District, Parishad Member Habib Azam, Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad Rangamati President Arup Mutsuddi, District Puja Udjapan Front Convener Nandita Das, Sadar Upazila Puja Udjapan Parishad General Secretary Subrata De, District Puja Udjapan Front Member Secretary Santu Chowdhury were present, among others.

After the meeting, a Shobhajatra paraded the main streets and ended at the Deputy Commissioner's office premises with participation of devotees, community leaders and people from all walks of life.

In Feni, a discussion meeting marking the festival was held at the Central Shaheed Minar. 

Janmashtami Celebration Council President Advocate Dilip Kumar Saha presided over the programme while General Secretary Advocate Rasik Shekhar Bhowmik conducted it. 

Deputy Director of the Local Government Department Golam Mohammad Baten attended the event as chief guest, while Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Ariful Islam and OC (Investigation) of Feni Model Police Station Sajal Kumar Das were present as special guests.

Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council President Shukdev Nath Tapan, Amulya Ratan Debnath, Central Secretary of Akhand Sangathan, Associate Professor Ajay Kumar Deb, Joint Secretary of District Janmashtami Udjapan Parishad, Vice President of Daganbhuiyan Upazila Oikya Parishad Bibhuti Bhushan Majumder, Secretary of Fulgazi Upazila Janmashtami Udjapan Parishad Pijus Sen Chowdhury, President of Daganbhuiyan Upazila Janmashtami Udjapan Parishad Deepak Sharma and President of Shardanjali Forum Daganbhuiyan Upazila Palash Das were present, among others.

The festival was also observed with due religious solemnity and enthusiasm in Bagerhat, Naogaon, Bandarban, Khagrachhari, Dinajpur, Magura, Sirajganj, Bogura, Satkhira, Nilphamari and other districts through various programmes including prayers, discussions, cultural events and processions.
