Travel ban imposed on ex-MP Swapon

DHAKA, Aug 17, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today imposed a travel ban on former Member of Parliament (MP) from Joypurhat-2 constituency Abu Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapon and his wife Mehbuba Alam over graft allegations.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order, allowing a plea of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The anti-graft body in its plea said a case has already been filed against the former lawmaker and his wife for amassing illegal wealth of Taka 1.26 crore, keeping those under their possession, making transactions through 28 bank accounts.

"For the sake of proper investigation, a travel ban should be imposed on them immediately," the ACC plea said.

Meanwhile, the same court also ordered to attach huge movable and immovable properties and freeze bank accounts of the couple.

The court ordered to attach properties worth Taka 2.80 crore of Swapon and properties worth Taka 3.83 crore of Mehbuba. 

The court also ordered to freeze Taka 2.22 crore belonging to the former lawmaker and Taka 15.63 lakh that was kept in bank in his daughter's name.
