Ex-lawmaker Apu arrested in Dhaka

JHENAIDAH, Aug 18, 2025 (BSS) - Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested former lawmaker of Jhenaidah-2 constituency and president of the district Awami League, Shafiqul Islam Apu, from Dhaka on Sunday night.

He was arrested from his residence in the Dhanmondi area of the capital around 9:30pm, police said.

According to Jhenaidah District Police, Apu had been absconding since August 5, 2024. He is accused in three separate cases, including charges of vandalism and arson at a BNP office.

Confirming the arrest, Officer-in-Charge of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Abdullah Al Mamun said the DB police apprehended Apu from a house in Dhaka and he is being brought back to Jhenaidah.

"There are multiple cases pending against Shafiqul Islam Apu. Legal procedures are underway, and he will be produced before the court today," the OC added.
