Jhenaidah AL President Apu taken on two day police remand

JHENAIDAH, Aug 18, 2025(BSS) - President of Jhenaidah district Awami League (AL) and former lawmaker of Jhenaidah-2 constituency Safiqul Islam Apu was taken on a two-day police remand today in a case over damaging and setting fire to a pharmacy here.

Earlier, he was brought to Jhenaidah from Dhaka and produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate Md Wazizur Rahman with a prayer for granting his five days remand. 

The court after hearing on a petition submitted by the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case granted his two days remand rejecting his bail petition.

Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Safiqul Islam Apu from his Dhanmondi residence on Sunday and handed him over to Jhenaidah police today.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Thana Abdullah Al Mamun said that Apu has been accused in five cases and already shown him arrested in connection with a case for damaging and setting fire to Akhter Pharmacy in the town.

Apu was elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Jhenaidah-2 constituency with AL ticket in 2008 general election and went into hiding after the change over on August 5 last year.

He was made President of Jhenaidah AL on March 24 in 2024 after the death of the then president and former MP Abdul Hay.
