CHATTOGRAM, Aug 18, 2025 (BSS)- Five people died as a pickup van rammed a parked covered van in the City Gate area of Chattogram today.

Police said the deceased were identified as Roni Das, 25, Akash Das, 26, Ajit Das, 24, Jewel Das, 18, and Mohammad Sohag, 32. All of them were passengers on the pickup and hailed from different parts of Sitakunda.

The deceased were all fish traders. They were travelling to Chattogram's Fishery Ghat from Sitakunda to buy fish.

The accident occurred on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Akbar Shah Thana around 5:30am on Monday, police said.

Four more people were injured in the accident. Akbar Shah Police Station Sub Inspector Sajjad Hossain said that the pickup was coming from Faujdarhat in Sitakunda to the port city when it hit a covered van parked on the side of the road from behind.

At least five people died on the spot, he said, adding four other people with injuries were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
