LAKSHMIPUR, Aug 19, 2025 (BSS) - BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has taken charge of the treatment of a local leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) Sultan Bappi, who lost his mental balance after being beaten up by Chhatra League-Juba League activists repeatedly during Awami League regime.

Bappi’s family was keeping him in chains for the past four years. Recently, news about him was published in the media which drew Tarique Rahman's attention.

The BNP acting chairman has taken responsibility for bringing Bappi back to normal life by ensuring better treatment.

At Tarique Rahman’s directives, District Chhatra Dal President Hasan Mahmud Ibrahim and General Secretary Abdullah Al Mamun went to Sultan Bappi's house in Ramarkhil village of Dattapara Union of Sadar Upazila with leaders and activists on Monday.

At that time, Central Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir spoke to Bappi through a video call.

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has made all arrangements for his treatment, said Nasir Uddin.

Bappi is a former joint convener of Dattapara Union Chhatra Dal of Sadar Upazila and son of Abdul Latif Sarkar, resident of Aishar Bari of Ramarkhil village.

Bappi's brother Md. Cholaiman said after organizing a Milad mahfil for Khaleda Zia's recovery in 2021, leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League beat Bappi repeatedly. At that time, he suffered a serious head injury and became mentally unstable.

Nasir Uddin said Tarique Rahman has made all inquiries and gave directives to bring Bappi to Dhaka for treatment.

“He has taken full responsibility for his treatment. The Chhatra Dal is working accordingly,” he said.

Accordingly, Sultan Bappi was taken to Dhaka by his family members on Tuesday morning for treatment, District Chhatra Dal General Secretary Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed it.

He said Sultan Bappi was an active leader of Chhatra Dal.

Bappi fell ill after being attacked and beaten by Chhatra League-Juba League cadres for holding doa mahfil seeking recovery of illness of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

Later, he was shackled as he was mentally unstable.  As a result, he has been bedridden for a long time. While lying down, he also suffered a wound from his waist down.
