DHAKA, Aug 28, 2025 (BSS) - BNP National Standing Committee Member Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed today said the constitution will be amended in parliament, not by unelected individuals.

"We want to build a new Bangladesh. Any party can amend the constitution any time. All over the world, elected representatives draft the constitution. This happened in Bangladesh and, God willing, it will happen again in the future. We want a fair election... under the interim government, I hope we will get a fair election and there the elected representatives will decide what the constitution of Bangladesh will be," he said.

Major Hafiz made the remarks at a discussion held in Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club.

Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal arranged the discussion titled 'Freedom Fighters Remain Uncompromising for Life in Defending Bangladesh's Independence and Sovereignty' marking its 33rd founding anniversary.

Major Hafiz said, "An international conspiracy is underway against Bangladesh. Therefore, at this time, we, the freedom fighters and the generation of the Liberation War, must be vigilant. Many are old, with beards and caps, but you haven't surrendered your training."

"If the BNP comes to power, we will transform this entire nation into a nation of freedom fighters. We will provide military training to students so that no neighboring country or anyone else can cast a hostile gaze upon Bangladesh," he added.

The senior BNP leader stressed the need for unity, saying, "Today, our need is unity, but various things are being heard. Among us, who fought together against Sheikh Hasina's fascist rule, many are now creating rifts as a glimpse of state power becomes visible. We sheltered Jamaat-e-Islami for so many years; they participated in elections with our symbol, and Begum Zia gave them a place in the cabinet. We have Zainul Abedin Faruq, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Mujibur Rahman Sarwar here - they could have been ministers. But because they (Jamaat) were our allies, they were made ministers."

Criticizing Jamaat-e-Islami, Major Hafiz said, "This party not only opposed Bangladesh in 1971 but also opposed the establishment of Pakistan in 1947. This party now wants to become the master of the people."

"They have already realized that they have no chance through the people; the people will not vote for them. Their only effort is to stop the BNP, to prevent the BNP from coming to power. Therefore, they feel no need for an election and are working tirelessly to delay it. We never thought such a situation would occur in Bangladesh," he added.

Addressing his party members, Hafiz said, "We must also be careful. If we, the BNP workers, do the same things that the Awami League has done, our fate will be the same as theirs."

"We must realize this as we move forward in the coming days. God willing, we will remain united and will not sacrifice our nationalism for the sake of state power," he added.

The discussion meeting was presided over by Ishitiak Aziz Ulfat, president of the Muktijoddha Dal. BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council Member Zainul Abedin Faruq, Habibur Rahman Habib, Mujibur Rahman Sarwar, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Muktijoddha Dal General Secretary Zainal Abedin, and executive committee member Mizanur Rahman, among others, were present in the discussion.
