FAO Bangladesh representative meets Environment Minister

DHAKA, March 31, 2026 (BSS) – Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo today held a meeting with the Bangladesh Representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Dr. Jiaoqun Shi at his office at the Secretariat.

During the meeting, the two sides held fruitful discussions on various issues related to environment, forestry and climate change, said a press release. 

Secretary to the Ministry Md. Raihan Kawser was also present during the meeting.

The minister highlighted the ministry’s short-, medium- and long-term initiatives and future plans aimed at ensuring environmental protection through the prevention of air, water and noise pollution, as well as promoting environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient development.

They also exchanged views on strengthening joint cooperation in sustainable agriculture, food security and tackling climate change. 

The minister appreciated FAO’s role in implementing projects in collaboration with the Department of Environment and the Forest Department under Global Environment Facility (GEF) funding in line with various international conventions. He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to working closely with the international organization.

FAO Bangladesh Representative Dr. Jiaoqun Shi said the organization has been supporting Bangladesh in areas such as hazardous waste management and pollution control, climate change monitoring and implementation of the Paris Agreement, pesticide management and chemical safety, climate-resilient livelihoods and adaptation projects, as well as biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration through policy planning and investment frameworks.

He also expressed his objective to continue cooperation with the ministry through the Department of Environment and the Forest Department in implementing relevant projects.

Both sides also discussed in detail the ways to further strengthen mutual cooperation in addressing climate change challenges.
