HATIYA, April 4, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Shipping Md. Rajib Ahsan today announced that initiatives will be taken to add new ferries and develop necessary infrastructure to improve the overall water transport system in Hatiya, a coastal island upazila of Noakhali.

He made these remarks this morning while visiting Nolchira and Chairman Ghat in Hatiya.

During the visit, the state minister inspected the existing problems at ferry terminals and river routes on-site and provided necessary directives to the concerned officials.

The State Minister said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is working equally for the development and welfare of people across all regions of the country.

Rajib Ahsan noted that, following the Prime Minister's instructions and out of his own sense of responsibility, he visited the area to assess the situation firsthand.

The State Minister further stated that the current government has taken effective measures to address the long-standing shortage of water transport and ferries in Hatiya.

He said efforts are underway to add a new ferry before the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. At the same time, all necessary steps will be taken to ensure safe, uninterrupted and comfortable water transport in coastal areas.

The State Minister mentioned that there are plans to widen ferry terminals on both sides of Hatiya. Regular dredging activities are ongoing to maintain navigability of the river channels.

Among those present during the visit were Shipping Ministry Secretary Dr. Nurunnahar Chowdhury, Chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mostafa; Director General of the Department of Shipping, Commodore Md. Shafiul Bari; along with other officials from the ministry and local administration.
