US embassy official makes courtesy call on Chief Whip

SANGSAD BHABAN, April 6, 2026 (BSS) - Political officer of the US embassy in Dhaka James Stewart today made a courtesy call today on Chief Whip M Nurul Islam at latter’s office at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. 

During the meeting they discussed the democratic journey of Bangladesh, the issue of July charter implementation, constitution amendment strategy and government’s role to make the parliament effective.

“There is no alternative to amendment of the constitution to take forward the democratic journey of the country,” said the chief whip, adding that the immediate past fascist government brought change in many places of the constitution in personal interest.

The constitution again to be made peoples friendly for the interest of the people, he said adding that the change of the constitution will be brought through the discussion with all political parties.

Chief whip said BNP has the majority to amend the constitution but the party wants the amendment of the constitution based on the opinion of all.

Regarding the implementation of the July Charter Nurul Islam said the ruling party is in favor of implementation of the July charter. 

“We want to implement the July charter which we have agreed. We want to discuss with all about the strategy of implementation,” the Chief Whip said.

The Chief Whip said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been giving message to the opposition for creating political harmony and a beautiful democratic environment after assuming office.

Even the Prime Minister visited the opposition leader’s residence after the victory in the election. The prime minister gave proposal to appoint deputy speaker from the opposition. 

He said the Prime Minister also thinking to give the position of the chairmanship of the parliamentary standing committees to the opposition party proportionately. The prime minister will do everything to make the parliament as the center of the democracy.

The US embassy official praised the present government’s initiative to support farmers, issuing family card and steps to bring political stability.
