DHAKA, April 13, 2026 (BSS) – A court here today rejected the bail petition of former director general (DG) of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, in a case filed over the killing of BNP activist Makbul in 2022.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order after police produced Khaled before the court upon completion of his one-day remand and pleaded to keep him behind bars until the end of the investigation. The defence, however, argued for his bail.

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained Khaled from his Mirpur DOHS residence on the night of March 25.

According to the case documents, BNP leaders and activists began gathering in the capital on December 10, 2022, as part of the party’s programme. Ahead of the programme, police and Awami League activists allegedly created a ruckus in front of the BNP central office in Naya Paltan on December 7. They entered the BNP office, charged batons and opened fire on BNP activists, critically injuring Makbul.

Makbul later died from his injuries at a hospital. The case was filed on September 30, 2024.
