RANGAMATI, April 23, 2026 (BSS) - A rare and endangered Bengal slow loris was rescued after being injured by an electric wire in Kaptai upazila of the district on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred in the KPM Kala Bagan area of Chandraghona union. The injured animal, locally known as “Lojjabati Banar,” was first spotted and rescued by Imran Hossain Emon, a member of the Wildlife Snake Rescue Team in Bangladesh and a resident of the area.
Speaking to BSS, Emon said he found the animal injured around 9:30 pm after it came in contact with an electric line. He quickly intervened to rescue it and alerted the Forest Department.
Responding promptly, a team from the Kaptai Range of the Forest Department arrived at the scene around 10:30 pm. After administering primary first aid, the workers transported the animal to Nischintapur Eco Park in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram district for further care and monitoring.
Osman Gani, an assistant from the Kaptai Range Office, confirmed that the rescued animal belongs to the endangered Bengal slow loris species. He said that only four to five individuals of this species are believed to exist in the entire Rangamati district.
The Bengal slow loris, native to the forests of South and Southeast Asia, is a nocturnal primate known for its slow movement and elusive behavior. Conservationists warn that habitat loss, electrocution, and illegal wildlife trade continue to threaten its survival.
Forest officials said the animal is currently under observation and will be released back into the wild once it recovers fully.
