DHAKA, April 30, 2026 (BSS) - The distribution of digital identity cards has begun as part of hawker management in the capital.
These digital ID cards were handed over to hawkers at the inauguration ceremony of the hawker rehabilitation programme held today to ensure smooth pedestrian movement on footpaths and to rehabilitate hawkers in an organized manner.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam inaugurated the event as the chief guest at the Nagar Bhaban auditorium.
This rehabilitation initiative has been launched under the proposed 'Dhaka City Hawker Management Policy 2026.'
At the event, digital ID cards were distributed among 100 hawkers from the Gulistan area for their relocation to the Link Road adjacent to Ramna Bhaban.
Under the proposed policy, specific locations and time schedules have been designated for hawkers in various important areas of DSCC.
In his speech as chief guest, the DSCC Administrator said, "Following the Prime Minister's directives, we have started managing hawkers in Dhaka city. This will ensure safe and pedestrian-friendly footpaths while also restoring discipline on the roads. Moreover, the registration and rehabilitation of hawkers will improve the living standards of marginalized communities."
Describing the Prime Minister's initiative as humane and groundbreaking, he added, "If hawkers, police, city corporation, and the general people work together, it will be possible to manage Dhaka city effectively."
He also urged rehabilitated hawkers to conduct their businesses legally by complying with all government and city corporation regulations and maintaining cleanliness in their allocated spaces.
DSCC officials and government officials concerned were present.
For daytime (day-to-day markets), the initially designated areas for hawkers include Gulistan Twin Tower lane, the Link Road adjacent to the east gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, one side near the south gate of New Market Dhaka, and the road adjacent to the field inside Shajahanpur Railway Colony.
Additionally, hawkers will be allowed to sell goods in evening markets (from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm) in front of Islami Chamber in Motijheel and surrounding areas, as well as behind the RAJUK Bhaban.
