DHAKA, Sept 1, 2025 (BSS)- The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed
Simon Taufel, a former umpire of the ICC Elite Panel, on a two-year contract.
He will work across umpiring and match officiating structures, including
assessment and grading of umpires.
The decision was made at the BCB Board of Directors meeting today at the
Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Taufel, an Australian umpire, has won the ICC Umpire of the Year award five
times in a row.
Regarding the appointment of Simon Taufel, Umpires Committee Chairman
Iftekhar Rahman Mithu said, "He works on the development of umpires in
various countries. He is even associated with the ICC. We have been talking
to him for a long time, and now the board has approved it."
Taufel started his umpiring career in 1999 and got the opportunity to
officiate in a Test in 2000. Due to his skills and credibility, the former
Australian cricketer was included in the ICC elite panel in 2003. For almost
a decade after that, he was one of the best umpires in the world.
Simon Taufel was an umpire in the ICC elite panel from 2003 to 2012. He has
experienced officiating at all the big matches of ICC mega events and
renowned series like the Ashes.
In total, Simon Taufel has officiated 74 Tests, 174 ODIs and 34 T20Is. He
also holds the unique record of being named ICC Umpire of the Year five times
in a row from 2004-2008.
