CHATTOGRAM, April 3, 2025 (BSS) – Police have arrested two youths this morning in connection with a double murder case.

The detainees have been identified as Md Belal, 27, son of Md Rafique from Islampur area under Lama Thana in Bandarban district, and Md Manik, 24, son of the late Abul Hashem from Oili Para of Kanchannagar Union in Fatikchhari upazila in the district.

Belal was arrested from the Badamtal area of Khwaza Road under Chandgaon Police Station in the city, while Manik was detained from his village home.

Officer-in-Charge of Bakalia Police Station, Ikhtiyar Uddin, confirmed that the arrested youths were involved in the killing mission that took place on the night of March 29.

Although Belal and Manik's names were not initially included in the case filed in relation to the double murder, police were able to identify the suspects by reviewing CCTV footage from the area.

On March 29, eight to ten members of a criminal gang, riding motorcycles, began chasing a car with five people onboard in the Bakalia Excess Road area of the city at 11 p.m. At one point, the gang members opened fire, targeting the car.

Bakhteyar Hossain Manik and Md Abdullah, who were inside the car, were shot dead during the reckless gunfire by the armed gangsters, while two others sustained bullet injuries.

Following the incident, Feroza Begum, mother of victim Bakhteyar Hossain Manik, filed a case with Bakalia Police Station, naming several persons, including recently arrested top terror Choto Sazzad, his wife Sharmin Akhter, Md Hassan, Mobarak Hossain Emon, Khorshed, Raihan, and Borhan.

It is suspected that the two persons were killed over rivalry between two criminal gangs over the sand extraction and trade from the southern bank of the Karnaphuli River in the New Bridge area.
