Two get life-term in Khulna drug case

KHULNA, June 16, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced two youths to 
life-term imprisonment in a drug case under Khalishpur Police Station in the 
city.

The court also fined the duo Taka 5000 each, in default, to suffer one month 
more in jail.

Khulna Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sumi Ahmed pronounced the 
verdict in the absence of two convicts, Shuvendu Roy Chowdhury, bench 
assistant of the court confirmed.

The convicted persons are Md Nurul Islam Sumon, son of Zahangir Hossain, 
resident of Banikpara Khanabari area under Daulatpur Police Station and Zwel 
Mahmud Sagar, son of Sheikh Ashraful Islam, hailed from Mirerdanga area under 
Khanjahan Ali Police Station in the city.
 
According to court sources, on the night of July 30, 2015, police from 
Khulna's Khalishpur Police Station received a tip-off that two young men were 
transporting 40 bottles of Phensedyl in a nylon bag through Khalishpur to 
Daulatpur. Acting on this information, police set up a checkpoint near 
Goalkhali Graveyard.

According to court sources, on the night of July 30, 2015, on secret 
information, police set up a check post in front of the Goalkhali graveyard 
and started to search suspected motorcycle riders. At around 11.10 pm, police 
detained two youths after chasing them when they were speedy crossing the 
check post ignoring the police signal.

Later, police seized 40 bottles of phensedyl from their possession in the 
presence of local people. Sub-Inspector (SI) Motiur Rahman filed a drug case 
against the duo at Khalishpur Police Station on the next day.

On August 24, 2015, SI Md Anwar Hossain pressed a charge-sheet against both 
accused to the court.
