Grandmother, granddaughter drown in canal in Fatikchhari

CHATTOGRAM, June 16, 2025 (BSS) - A woman and her granddaughter died 
while bathing in Dhurong canal in the Mahisherghona area of Manikpur 
village under Kanchannagar union of Fatikchari upazila on Monday afternoon. 

The deceased were identified as Shahanu Begum, 50 and her granddaughter 
Muntaha, 8, hailed from Manikpur village in the upazila. 

Locals said that Shahanu went to bathe in the Dhurong canal near her house 
with her two granddaughters Sumaiya and Muntaha in the afternoon. 

During the bath, Muntaha started to sink in the water. Shahanu and Sumaiya 
attempted to pull her out but they also started to sink in the current. 
Sumaiya managed to swim to the shore, but Shahanu drowned. After being 
missing for about three hours, locals first rescued Shahanu and then Muntaha 
from the canal, both deceased.

Fatikchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nur Mohammad confirmed.
