CHATTOGRAM, June 19, 2025 (BSS) - City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said a clean Chattogram must be built through proper sewage management as sanitation and waste treatment are very important in improved urban management.
The mayor made the remarks at a discussion meeting held today at the CCC’s head-office Tiger Pass to determine the steps for signing a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), Chattogram WASA and Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) on sewage management and on-site sanitation management in the city.
“To build a smart city, not only roads but also a modern sewage system should be built. Proper sanitation infrastructure is essential to reduce waterlogging, reuse water and protect public health. Especially, in areas where it is not possible to implement a sewage system through pipelines, technology-based waste collection and treatment arrangements need to be made,” he added.
WASA informed the meeting that an integrated drainage and sanitation master plan was formulated for Chattogram city in 2017.
It proposed dividing the entire city into 66 catchment areas and constructing a sewage treatment plant in each. It has also been recommended to establish two fecal sludge treatment plants for the entire city. In areas where it is not possible to install a sewage pipeline, measures will be taken to collect human waste from septic tanks and treat it mechanically.
A study has also been conducted with the funding of the World Bank in this regard and WASA is working according to the recommendations.
CCC Secretary Md. Ashraful Amin, Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman, Chief Accounting Officer Humayun Kabir, Task Team Leader Arif Ahmed, Co-Task Team Leader Harsh Goyal, Institutional Consultant Somnath Sen, WASA Chief Engineer Maqsud Alam, Supervising Engineer Mohammad Ariful Islam and Executive Engineer Muhammad Rezaul Ahsan Chowdhury were present on behalf of WASA.
