KHULNA, May 13, 2026 (BSS) – A court in Khulna today sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her twin daughters in a widely discussed murder case in Terokhada upazila in Khulna.
Judge Md. Manjurul Imam of the Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal pronounced the verdict, sentencing convict Kaniz Fatema Kona to rigorous life imprisonment.
The court also fined her Tk 10,000, with an additional six months’ rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.
The convict was present in the courtroom during the pronouncement of the verdict.
According to court sources, Kaniz Fatema Kona is the daughter of Sheikh Khairuzzaman alias Khayer of Kushla village under Terokhada upazila in Khulna district.
High Bench Assistant of the Tribunal Md. Mazaharul Islam said, citing the case statement, that Kona married Md. Masum Billah, son of Molla Abu Bakar of Mollahat upazila in Bagerhat district, in 2018.
On December 7, 2021, Kona gave birth to twin daughters through caesarean section at Lucky Clinic in Mollahat.
After delivery, she went to her parental home with the newborns and she frequently requested her husband over phone to take her back to her in-laws’ house but he allegedly told her he would do so soon.
On February 18, 2022, Kona’s younger sister informed Masum Billah over phone that the two babies were missing.
After receiving the news, he rushed to his in-laws’ house and joined family members in searching for the children.
The following morning around 6 am, the bodies of the twin girls were recovered floating in the family pond at the house.
Following the incident, the twins’ father Md. Masum Billah filed a case with Terokhada Police Station against his wife on February 18, 2022.
Later, on March 31 the same year, the investigation officer of the case, SI Md. Enamul Haque of Terokhada Police Station, submitted the charge sheet against Kona before the court.
