DHAKA, March 16, 2026 (BSS) - Road Transport and Bridges and Shipping
Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam today warned that unfit vehicles would not be
allowed to ply on roads.
He made the warning after visiting the capital's Mohakhali Bus Terminal this
morning.
The road transport minister said the surveillance team is monitoring the
issue of unfit vehicles by going to the garages and all relevant agencies and
the highway police are active too.
He said action will be taken immediately if any complaint is received against
any specific vehicle.
Rabiul said there has been no instance of charging extra fares during Eid
journeys.
Discipline is being maintained in passenger transport at the capital's bus
terminals ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, he said, adding that all those involved in
road transport have been asked to remain vigilant in this regard.
"There was no instance of charging extra fares in the last seven days. On the
contrary, in some places, passengers are being carried at a rate of Taka 20
to Taka 50 less than the stipulated fare," he said.
The road transport minister said he visited the capital's bus terminal today
with the concerned officials to oversee the overall situation of the Eid
journey. It was seen that passengers were boarding the buses in order by
purchasing tickets and the buses were leaving the terminal on regular basis,
he added.
The law enforcement agencies, BRTA and volunteers of the transport owners-
workers' associations are working together to ensure the safe journey of the
passengers, he said.
Noting that the passenger pressure would increase from this afternoon, Rabiul
said since tomorrow (Tuesday) is a public holiday, the passenger pressure may
increase in the afternoon or evening.
To deal with that situation, sufficient buses have been kept ready and
arrangements have been made to enter and exit the bus terminal in stages so
that no disruption to traffic is created on the main road, he said.
Regarding the Mohakhali Bus Terminal, the minister further said due to
limited space at the bus terminal, it is not possible to park all the buses
together.
Management is being done in this manner, with one bus leaving after another,
so that traffic on the main road remains normal, he said, expressing hope
that the situation will be better managed in the next two-three days.
About fuel supply, he said, adequate fuel has been ensured for public
transport and the price of fuel will not be increased. "If any transport
owner complains about not getting fuel, it will be verified and action will
be taken accordingly," Rabiul said.
He said about 15 million people will leave Dhaka in just two to two and a
half days, which creates a lot of pressure. Even so, the relevant government
agencies are working in a coordinated manner to ensure a safe and comfortable
Eid journey for the home goers.
