Intellectual property rights workshop held at BOU

DHAKA, Jan 21, 2025 (BSS) – A workshop on “Ensuring Intellectual Property Rights” for university faculty was held at Bangladesh Open University campus today.

The workshop was held with the aim of protecting intellectual property of university faculty and upgrading research to international standards.

Bangladesh University Grants Commission organized the batch-1 and 2 of the workshop to learn about necessity, importance and application process for ensuring intellectual property rights of the university faculty.

The workshop was held under the Action Plan 19 of the Strategic Plan for Higher Education 2018-2030, according to a press release.

 The workshop was organised on January 19 and January 21, 2025 where  University Grants Commission member Professor Dr Masuma Habib spoke as the chief guest.

She said in the context of Bangladesh, intellectual property rights were not given importance, but the brand of a product basically depends on intellectual property rights.

“If intellectual property rights are not secured properly, it will bring danger in the future. And first of all, proper initiatives should be taken for its implementation,” Dr Masuma added. 

She further said, “The Chief Adviser is also a teacher so he will understand the problem and I hope the Education Adviser will be kind to us about increasing the budget in the education and research sector.”

UGC Director Dr Durga Rani Sarkar chaired the workshop, while Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University, Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam, delivered speech as the special guest. 

UGC Secretary Dr Md Fakhrul Islam joined the workshop virtually. BOU Director Professor Dr Md Sirajul Islam, Deputy Director Md Habibur Rahman, UGC Deputy Director Engineer Mohammad Nirullah and Assistant Director Md Belal Hossain were present in the 2-day workshop.

Around 30 teachers and officials from different universities participated in each session of the workshop.
