DHAKA, Feb 22 (BSS) - Food Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid today said the government's target is to achieve full food self-sufficiency and eventually export food products abroad.
"The country currently has adequate food stocks. The government's next target is to achieve full food self-sufficiency and eventually export food products abroad, he said. "We must work together to accomplish this," he said.
Rashid made the remarks while addressing an introductory meeting with his ministry officials at the conference room of the ministry here.
State Minister for Food Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Food Secretary Md. Firoz Sarker, along with senior officials of the ministry were present, among others.
Referring to the expectations of the people, Amin Ur Rashid said the government will ensure equal rights, and freedom of expression.
He said the government is committed to build a beautiful and prosperous Bangladesh for the next generation.
He sought wholehearted cooperation from his ministry officials in achieving this goal, said an official handout.
He pointed out that nearly 70 percent of the country's population is directly or indirectly engaged in agriculture.
Strengthening their economic backbone would automatically reinforce the remaining 30 percent of the population, he added.
"Ultimately, the true measure of economy, development, and progress lies in food security. No matter how much wealth one accumulates, the fundamental truth of life remains the satisfaction of hunger," the minister said.
He stressed that the responsibilities of food production, fisheries, meat, and egg production are of immense importance and closely linked to national interest.
Speaking at the meeting, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said since August 5, 2024, a visible change has taken place in public mindset.
"People no longer want inequality, nor do they tolerate irregularities and corruption. It is our collective duty to support the Prime Minister in fulfilling his responsibilities," he added.
