DHAKA, 19 March 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Shipping Md Razib Ahsan today said the government has decided to completely stop the practice of boarding passengers from boats to launches in the middle of rivers.
“The government is very strict in preventing overloading of passengers on launches. In particular, those who board launches using boats in the middle of rivers will be completely stopped. No passengers will be allowed to board launches from boats. We are uncompromising on this decision,” he said.
He made the remarks while briefing journalists this afternoon after inspecting passenger safety, services, and the overall situation at the Sadarghat launch terminal in the capital.
Noting that the law enforcement agencies have strengthened monitoring to maintain discipline, Razib urged the public to follow rules and remain cautious about personal safety.
Outlining future plans, the state minister said the system of river crossings will be changed in the future to stop uncontrolled movement of boats and launches.
The government plans to develop a permanent and planned system of crossing the river a little away from the ghats, he said.
Regarding complaints of excessive fares, the state minister said so far no passenger has reported such issues.
“Considering passenger convenience, the government has already reduced fares by 10 percent, and it is in effect. If anyone has complaints about overcharging, they are requested to submit them with proper evidence,” he said.
The state minister further said the relevant authorities of the Ministry of Shipping are monitoring the situation in the field daily and directly communicating with passengers to ensure service quality.
