MYMENSINGH, May 22, 2026 (BSS) - Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu today said the ongoing canal excavation programme would pave the way for a "green revolution" by restoring ecological balance, reviving water flow and strengthening agricultural production across the country.

"The canal excavation programme will help restore the natural balance. Fish will return to the canals, and irrigation using canal water will revive the traditional spirit of 'Mache-Bhate Bangali'," he said.

The minister made the remarks while inspecting the re-excavation work of Dharar Khal in Trishal this afternoon.

He called upon people from all walks of life to actively participate in the initiative, stressing that community involvement is essential for ensuring sustainable environmental development and agricultural benefits.

He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Trishal tomorrow to inaugurate the re-excavation work of the historic canal linked with the memory of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.

Recalling history, the minister noted that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman had originally launched the canal excavation programme on September 6, 1979.

During the visit, the Prime Minister is also expected to plant a palm tree beside the canal as part of the programme.

A festive atmosphere has been created in the area surrounding the visit, with local residents expressing enthusiasm over the initiative and its expected benefits.

Local Parliament Member Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Liton, Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner Saifur Rahman, and other local political leaders were present during the inspection programme.
