CHATTOGRAM, June 15, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has taken an initiative to introduce an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based smart traffic management system to ease traffic congestion, improve road discipline and enhance overall urban management through modern technology.

A Development Project Proposal (DPP) has already been prepared for the project, Chattogram City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said at a meeting held at the CCC conference room today.

Representatives of a consultancy firm presented proposals for two technology-based development projects designed for the port city during the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, the mayor stressed the need for adopting modern technologies to transform Chattogram into a clean, green, healthy, safe and smart city.

He said the AI-based smart traffic management system is one of the city's most important planned projects, which is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve road discipline and curb violations of traffic regulations.

The project is estimated to cost Tk 217.33 crore and will introduce advanced technological facilities at 56 major intersections and high-traffic areas across the city.

Under the project, vehicle movements will be monitored through smart traffic signals, traffic flow monitoring cameras, law violation detection cameras, automatic number plate recognition systems, red-light violation detectors and a centralized traffic control system.

The mayor said the fully AI-driven system will be capable of automatically identifying vehicles involved in traffic rule violations.

"By analysing vehicle number plates, movement patterns and real-time traffic conditions, the system will enable authorities to take prompt and effective action against offenders," he said.

Dr. Shahadat said the project covers almost all major and busy traffic corridors of the city, allowing authorities to manage Chattogram's traffic network through an integrated digital platform.

He expressed hope that the initiative would help reduce traffic congestion, restore order on the roads and lessen the sufferings of commuters while making city management more efficient and technology-driven.
