RAJSHAHI, Aug 15, 2025 (BSS) - Rajshahi, along with its surrounding areas, is witnessing a positive trend in native fish farming, marked by technological advancement, species diversification and burgeoning economic opportunities.

The growth of native fish farming in the region is being propelled by a combination of government initiatives, increased public awareness and the adoption of modern farming techniques. As a result, farmers are diversifying their fish production and utilizing more efficient and sustainable practices.

The Department of Fisheries (DoF) has been playing a significant role in promoting fish farming through training, infrastructure development (like hatcheries and nurseries) and the distribution of resources.

In line with these initiatives, the DoF on Thursday released approximately 550 kilograms of fingerlings of native fish species into open water bodies and canals in the Paba and Mohanpur Upazilas. The release aims to bolster native fish population and enhance the livelihoods of local fishermen.

DoF Divisional Director Saifuddin Yeahiya accompanied by Upazila Nirbahi Officers Aeafat Aman Aziz and Ayesha Siddiqua Senior Assistant Directors Sarder Mohiuddin and Asim Kumar Ghosh and District Fisheries Officer Jahangir Alam oversaw the fingerling release.

Upazila Fisheries Officers Waliullah Mollah and Kamrul Islam were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Saifuddin Yeahiya attributed that the Rajshahi region has achieved a degree of self-sufficiency in fish production and is even exporting fish to other regions.

Fish farming, he said, is providing sustainable livelihoods and economic stability to many residents, including an increasing number of young people who are venturing into ornamental fish farming.

A fish sanctuary in Pirijpur village, Godagari Upazila, has been established to protect and conserve native fish species. It has helped in the breeding of various endangered and rare fish species.

Yeahiya also said that the rise of commercial fish farming has positively impacted the financial and social standing of many individuals in the area, especially through the implementation of composite fish farming. By raising multiple species together, farmers have seen higher yields and greater profits.

The expansion of fish farming, particularly in the Barind tract, has led to a marked increase in fish production, making Rajshahi a key supplier of live fish, including major markets in Dhaka.
