Two jailed for 8 years for embezzlement in Khulna

KHULNA, Aug 28, 2025 (BSS) - A Khulna court today sentenced two persons, including a former Grameen Bank manager and a sub-postmaster, to eight years of rigorous imprisonment each in two separate embezzlement cases.

The court also imposed financial penalties, in default; they will have to suffer one year more imprisonment.

Md Ashraful Islam, Judge of the Divisional Special Judge's Court of Khulna, delivered the verdict against Syed Zahidur Rahman, former manager of Grameen Bank's Atulia branch in Shyamnagar in Satkhira, and Md. Nazmul Islam, sub-postmaster of Nalta Mobaraknagar Sub-Post Office in the same district.

Of the convicts, Nazmul Islam was present in the court, while Rahman remains at large.

According to the prosecution, Rahman abused his authority at the Grameen Bank's Atulia branch by taking deposits from external depositors without recording them in the bank's books between September 4, 2005, and October 7, 2010.

He also withdrew money with forged signatures on checks and disbursed fake loans under the names of landless women borrowers, through these fraudulent activities, he embezzled Tk 44.50 lakh.

On April 5, 2012, the then-branch manager, Mohammad Arifuzzaman, filed a case with Shyamnagar Police Station. Following the investigation, ACC submitted a charge sheet against Rahman in 2018, and charges were framed in May 2022.

Meanwhile, Md. Nazmul Islam, while serving as sub-postmaster of Nalta Mobaraknagar, misappropriated Tk 25.38 lakh by not depositing the money into the government exchequer.

A case was filed with the Debhata Police Station by the postal inspector.
On December 21, 2016, ACC Assistant Director Md. Nazmul Hossain submitted a charge sheet against him, and charges were framed in October 2018.
