CHATTOGRAM, Aug 20, 2025 (BSS) - The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed two separate cases against Jubo League leader Helal Akbar Chowdhury Babar and his wife Jasmine Akhter on charges of concealing information and amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.
ACC Deputy Director Subel Ahmed confirmed the matter to journalists today.
ACC Assistant Director Md. Naushad Ali lodged the cases with the Commission's Chattogram Integrated District Office-1.
According to case details, Babar, son of late Jahangir Alam Chowdhury of Nandankanan Buddhist Temple Road area under Kotwali Police Station, was found to possess assets worth Tk 1.19 crore illegally.
He had earlier declared immovable assets worth Tk 9.09 lakh and movable assets worth Tk 1.68 crore. However, verification revealed immovable assets worth Tk 30.88 lakh more than his declaration.
His income tax documents showed an acceptable income of Tk 1.41 crore between fiscal years 2012-13 and 2020-21, while his actual assets and expenses amounted to Tk 2.30 crore, leaving Tk 88.87 lakh unaccounted for.
Meanwhile, his wife Jasmine Akhter, who had declared immovable assets of Tk 2.10 crore and movable assets of Tk 24.60 lakh, was found to have concealed wealth of Tk 15.50 lakh.
Her income tax records showed an income of Tk 2.66 lakh, but the ACC found her acceptable income at Tk 86.45 lakh, against which assets of Tk 1.83 crore were acquired beyond known sources.
In total, Jasmine was accused of possessing Tk 1.98 crore worth of illegal assets.
Helal Akbar Babar, a former deputy finance secretary of the Jubo League central executive committee, is widely known in Chattogram politics as a close aide of former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel.
