2.49 crore meters illegal fishing nets seized in weeklong operation

DHAKA, Aug 21, 2025 (BSS) - The River Police has seized a huge quantity of illegal fishing nets and arrested 306 crime suspects in a weeklong nationwide operation aimed at protecting the country's fisheries resources and ensuring safety on the waterways.

 
Over 2.49 crore meters of illegal nets, 2,617 kg of fish, 5,000 pieces of shrimp fries were seized during the operation and 234 bushes were destroyed from the rivers in the past week, said a press release of the River Police. 

 
During the weeklong operation, 306 accused were arrested from across the country. A total of 51 cases including 21 under Fisheries Act, 14 for reckless driving, seven for Unintentional Deaths, one for extracting sand illegally, one under the Narcotics Control Act, one for polluting rivers, one for robbery and three for murders and two under other acts. 

 
Eighteen bodies were recovered during the period.
 
In the operation the River Police filed cases against 101 bulkheads and seized five for having no legal documents.

 
It is to be noted that the seized illegal nets have been destroyed while fish have been distributed to orphanages and fish fries have been released into the water.
