DHAKA, Aug 25, 2025 (BSS) - A Dhaka court today sentenced six people to life imprisonment in a case filed over the murder of BNP leader Masud Rana of Kalia upazila in Narail.
Judge Rafikul Islam of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 pronounced the verdict, sentencing local Awami League leader Kazal Mollah, Shipon Mollah, Lithu Mollah, Setu Mollah, Linku Sheikh and Topu Khan to life imprisonment. The court also fined them Taka 50,000 each, in default to suffer six more months in jail.
The tribunal awarded 20 years' imprisonment each to Taiyabur Gazi, Humayun Mollah, Limon Mollah, Hridoy Khan, Toni Mollah, Sohan Mollah and Hasmot Mollah under sections 323 and 307 of the Penal Code.
Besides, Nazrul Mollah, Robi Mollah, Abujar Mollah and Samraj Mollah were handed down different jail terms totalling 21 months, public prosecutor Dalia Pervin told BSS.
According to the case documents, on August 5, 2020, the convicts led by Kazal Mollah, armed with firearms and sharp weapons, stormed into the house of Sardar Tabibur Rahman at Deoadanga under Kalia Police Station. Kazal ordered his men to kill everyone in sight. They opened fire, injuring 10 people, including Masud Rana, who was shot in the head by Kazal himself. Masud Rana died on his way to hospital.
The victim's younger brother Mamun Sheikh filed the case the next day. Police submitted the charge-sheet against 38 accused on October 12, 2020, while the court framed charges on September 1, 2021. In the meantime, Kazal Mollah and Linku Sheikh made confessional statements.
The court delivered today's verdict after examining 40 out of 47 prosecution witnesses.
