Ex-JU BCL leader Jony remanded in uprising killing case

DHAKA, Aug 25, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today placed Mahmudur Rahman Jony, 
former president of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Jahangirnagar 
University unit, on a two-day remand in a case filed over the killing of 
student Nafisa Hossain Marufa during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohagh passed the order as 
police produced Jony before the court and sought a five-day remand.

Law enforcers arrested him from Savar Police Town area on August 23 last.

According to the case documents, 17-year old Nafisa Hossain Marufa, a student 
of Tongi Shahajuddin Sarker Model Higher Secondary School, had joined an 
anti-discrimination student procession in front of the Model Masjid Complex 
in Savar on August 5, 2024. The procession came under attack, leaving Marufa 
shot. She later succumbed to her injuries.

Her father, Abul Hossain, filed the case on September 11, 2024 in this 
connection.
