256 candidates cleared to contest JUCSU polls

JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Aug 25, 2025 (BSS) - The draft list of candidates for the long-awaited Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) election was published today, with 256 out of 276 candidates declared primarily valid to contest.

Election Commission's Member Secretary and JU Proctor Professor Dr A K M Rashidul Alam disclosed the information in a press briefing this evening at the Senate Hall of the university. 

According to the draft, 20 candidates will vie for the position of Vice President (VP). Professor Alam said candidacy of 20 students had been cancelled, while 256 others were cleared as valid. The rejected candidates may appeal to the commission on Tuesday (August 26) between 9 am and 2 pm. 

Other posts drew notable interest as well, with 17 candidates for GS (15 male, 2 female), 21 for Joint General Secretary (JGS-Male) and 9 for Joint General Secretary (JGS-Female).

Besides, a total of 13 candidates will vie for Education and Research Secretary, while Environmental and Nature Preservation Affairs Secretary 13, Literary and Publication Secretary 9, Cultural Secretary 9, Assistant Cultural Secretary 11, Drama Secretary 7, Sports Secretary 5, Assistant Sports Secretary male 6 and female 6. Information and Library Secretary drew 14 candidates, Social Service and Human Resource Development Affairs Secretary 14, with 9 for Assistant Secretary (Male) and 5 for Assistant Secretary (Female).

A total of 12 candidates will be vying for Health and Food Security Affairs Secretary, while 7 are contesting for Transport and Communication Secretary. For the executive member positions, 32 male and 17 female candidates have been declared initially valid.

As per the schedule, appeals regarding the draft list will be heard on August 27, while candidates may withdraw nominations until August 28. The final list will be announced on August 29, followed by campaign activities from August 29 to September 9. The long-awaited election is scheduled to be held on September 11.
