Driver held in connection with KU student Moumita death

KHULNA, April 6, 2026 (BSS) - Police have arrested a driver and seized a private car in connection with the death of a student of Khulna University in a road accident in the city.

Additional Police Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Hasan of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) confirmed the development on Monday at noon.

The deceased, Moumita Halder, was a Master's student of the Law Discipline at Khulna University.

According to police and case details, the accident occurred around 6:50 pm on March 30 when Moumita was travelling by a rickshaw with her father towards the court area. 

As the rickshaw reached in front of the Zila Parishad Bhaban under Khulna Sadar Police Station, a speeding private car hit it from behind on K D Ghosh Road.

Moumita fell off the rickshaw and sustained severe head injuries. She was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital where the on duty doctor declared her dead at around 7:50 pm.


Following the incident, the victim's father filed a case on the next day with Khulna Sadar Police Station.

The Investigation Officer (IO), Sub Inspector (SI) Debabrata Biswas, reviewed CCTV footage from the nearby area and identified the car involved in the crash. 

Acting on the findings, police recovered the blue Toyota private car from a garage behind Coronation School in the city on April 3, around 12:05 pm.

Subsequently, using information technology, police arrested the driver, Md. Ahad Sheikh Saikat, 26, from the northern gate area of Hadis Park under Khulna Sadar Police Station at around 6:05 pm on April 5.

Police said the accused has been produced before the court.
