Two fishermen missing after boat capsizes in Khulna storm

KHULNA, April 7, 2026 (BSS) - Two fishermen went missing after a fishing boat had capsized during a sudden storm in a river in Koyra upazila of Khulna this afternoon.

The incident occurred in the middle of the Shakbaria River near Jorshing village under South Bedkashi union, when three fishermen were catching fish and crabs. Their boat overturned after being hit by a sudden storm.

The missing fishermen have been identified as Upen Mridha, 50, and Mukenda Mondal, 42, both residents of Jorshing village in Bedkashi union. Another fisherman, Bipul Roy, 35, managed to swim ashore safely.

Local Union Parishad member Abu Bakar Siddique said the boat sank abruptly during the storm, leaving little time for the fishermen to react. Local residents immediately began search operations in the river.

Koyra Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Abdullah Al Baki confirmed that one fisherman was rescued alive, while two others remain missing.

Officer-in-Charge of Koira Police Station Zahidul Islam said the three fishermen had gone to the river to catch fish and crabs when the incident occurred. Rescue efforts are still ongoing.
