Rajshahi attains significant success in fish farming, production

RAJSHAHI, June 21, 2025 (BSS) - Rajshahi district has attained significant success in the field of fish farming and production besides supplying live fishes to different parts of the country including the capital Dhaka.
 
Live fishes valued at about Taka two crore in around 140 to 150 trucks are being supplied to different parts of the country, including the capital, from the district everyday at present.
 
Besides, a silent revolution has happened in fish farming during the last couple of years generating employment for around 2.9 lakh people in the district.
 
District Fisheries Officer (DFO) Jahangir Alam revealed this while addressing a workshop titled "Infrastructure Development Project for Boosting Capacity and Production in the Government Fish Farms" here today.

The District Fisheries Office as part implementation of the project organised the workshop at Midas Restaurant.

Director of the Department of Fisheries (DoF) SM Rezaul Karim and Rajshahi Divisional Director Saifuddin Yeahiya addressed the workshop as the chief and special guests respectively with DFO Jahangir Alam in the chair.
 
DFO Jahangir Alam said there are scores of ponds on around 13,050 hectares of land producing more than 84,000 metric tons of fish last fiscal year against the demand for 52,000 tonnes.
 
The district has also attained significant success in fish spawn and fish fingerling production which are also surplus than the existing demand.
 
He also told the meeting that the success has been attained as a result of adoption of multidimensional development and extension programmes including promotion of modern technologies.
 
Fish farming is making many people financially solvent along with boosting their social dignity and contributing to meeting the demand for animal protein of the region besides different other parts of the country.

In his remarks, Rezaul Karim said the DoF has been enriching the fisheries sector in a planned way for generating employment for the country's jobless people.

Terming the sector as very much potential, he said there are scopes of taking the country economically forward through bolstering the sector.

He, however, said fish farming is not only enhancing the financial well-being of many individuals but also elevating their social status. It is making a significant contribution to fulfilling the demand for animal protein in the region and other parts of the country.
